Week 3: Hogfest 2011

Hogfest 2011 was about 20 brave men from YGRFC who overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to come close to winning the tournament:

Stefan, Kyle, Mike, Drew, Kristian, Ben O, Ben M, Joe, Paul, Allen, Dmitri, Gonzo, Karl, Zulu, Johannes, Sebastian, Curtis, Wayda, Sam, Kevin

These men overcame injuries, late arrivals to the pitch, extremely physical opposition and bad pitches to put in a solid showing for YGRFC.

Group stage:
Match 1: Yale- Wharton B: 24-5
Starting with only 14 men on the field, all hope seemed to be lost but Stefan put in the first try and that opened the floodgates. Drew and Karl added in their tries and the team was playing great defence to stop Wharton B from scoring. Wharton B could only muster a consolation try.

Match 2: Yale- Columbia Business: 22-5
Down by a try in the first half, the team had not played well at all and were sloppy in giving too many easy turnovers. The waterlogged pitch did not help matters too. However, in the second half, an inspired YGRFC came back brilliantly. A try by Johannes pouncing a ball at the tryzone from a Kristian kick tied the score. Kristian's kicks proved crucial as many of his kicks led to our backs chasing down the ball, threatening to score everytime we had possession. Kristian added in another two penalty kicks and a try down the middle. YGRFC defence was incredible as we kept a clean sheet and our forwards manhandled the CBS forwards at the middle of the park. This brought our season record to 4-0, still undefeated.

Match 3: Yale- Columbia Med: 17-8
Already secured for the semi finals, we had key absentees due to injuries and other commitments. A sloopy game with many turnovers resulted in a comfortable win for Columbia Med with Yale rarely threatening. Moreover, with most players focusing on the semi final game, our undefeated record for the season was broken with a defeat.

Semi final: Yale- Wharton A: 0-25
A game that should have been close but costly turnovers resulted in 5 tries for the Wharthogs. Almost all our forwards were outweighed at least 50 pounds by their opposition counterpart. Requiring two of our men to tackle any of their forwards, our men bravely resisted every attack that the Wharthogs launched at us. Even with most of the team suffering minor injuries, everyone gave it their all at every tackle. The team was put on the backfoot for most of the match and rarely found the opportunity to score due to the turnovers that occured on almost every possession. A valient effort by the team could not bring YGRFC to the finals but these lads should be proud of themselves for getting this far. The general opinion among the team was that with our full squad of 50, we would be a match with Wharton, which is usually one of the best grad rugby teams in the world. YGRFC cannot wait to face Wharton again at Duke.

Our season record thus far: 4-2
